On 17 February 2026, FAO, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Forestry (MALFF), convened a meeting with farmers and livestock keepers in Uma Uain Craic Village, Viqueque Administrative Post, Viqueque Municipality. This activity forms part of a broader joint effort to strengthen dairy buffalo milk production in Timor-Leste, contributing to improved food security, nutrition, and community livelihoods.
The meeting introduced the planned activities, which will be implemented gradually at the community level. Uma Uain Craic was selected as one of the initial sites based on community readiness, its proximity to the Ministry’s dairy buffalo demonstration farm, and the existing experience of households in buffalo rearing.
During the session, three farmer groups were established, with two additional groups to be formed in the next phase. Community members demonstrated strong engagement and provided constructive feedback to help ensure effective and sustainable implementation.
This initiative represents an important step toward advancing the dairy buffalo subsector across Timor-Leste, through a collaborative approach that brings together government institutions, development partners, and local communities.
